Q. What after sales services do you offer?

A. We offer repairs, alterations and rewaxing of waxed cotton garments.

We are not able to repair non-waxed cotton garments (eg breathables/quilts) due to the construction of the garments and the technology and machinery required to carry out repairs.

Q. How long will it take to service my jacket?

A. The time it takes to service and return your garment fluctuates depending on demand, the average is between 4 and 6 weeks. We recommend you complete the garment repair form from this website and send in with your jacket and payment.

For the last week in May and the first three weeks of August the Barbour factory is closed. It will therefore take longer to service jackets during and after this period.

This service time is specific to our repair centre in the UK.

Please note that our Customer Services factory closed for their annual 3 week summer holiday on Friday 30 July 2010. Whilst parcels can be accepted during this time, no processing will take place and delays may be inevitable when the factory returns to work. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this may cause.

Q. How often do you recommend reproofing a wax jacket and can I do it myself?

A. It all depends on the amount of use of the jacket and how it is stored. With regular wear we would recommend that it is reproofed every year.

You can reproof the jacket yourself by purchasing a tin of Barbour Thornproof Dressing from a Barbour stockist and carefully follow the instructions on the tin.

Q. Where can I get my Barbour wax jacket serviced?

A. Many of our retail stockists will be happy to discuss servicing requirements with you and return your jacket to our Customer Service department.

Alternatively you can return your jacket direct using the garment return form found on this web site.

Q. My wax jacket is dirty how can I clean it?

A. The only way you can clean your waxed cotton garment is to sponge it down with clean cold water - including the inner lining.

Do not use soaps or detergents, wash in a washing machine or dryclean as this would permanently damage the garment and any re-application of the wax coating will be totally absorbed by the cotton fabric and will soil the inner lining. This in turn, will soil any clothing worn underneath the jacket.

Q. How do I wash a waterproof / breathable jacket?

A. Please refer to the washing instructions sewn into each garment. Generally all Barbour waterproof breathable outerwear can be machine or hand-washed at 30 degrees. The use of a ‘non-detergent soap” such as Nikwax Techwash is recommended for waterproof breathable garments. Fabric softeners should not be used as these prevent the durable water repellent treatment from working effectively.

Q. How do I make a claim under your product guarantee?

A. On the rare occasion that you may need to make a claim under our product guarantee, you can return the garment to the retailer from whom you purchased the product. Alternatively you can contact our Customer Service Department who can arrange for a pre-paid bag to be sent to return the garment for inspection. The following information would be required:-

  1. The nature of your complaint
  2. When and where the product was purchased and proof of purchase
  3. Your day time contact details including an email address if applicable
  4. Your full mailing address including postcode

Q. I have lost my belt on my jacket, where can I get a replacement?

A. We would need to know the catalogue number and size of the garment and we can then make the request with our production department to see if they are able to source a replacement belt for you. If we can make a replacement belt for you, subject to the fabric and trim availability, the charge is £10.

Q. Can I dry clean my Barbour wax jacket?

A. No, unfortunately you can not dry clean Barbour wax garments.  The chemical process used in dry cleaning may permanently damage or remove the proofing.

Q. I've put my wax jacket into a washing machine to clean it and now all the wax has come off. What can I do?

A. Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done as the washing process strips all the wax finish from the cotton fabric. Any re-application of the wax coating will be totally absorbed by the cotton fabric and will soil the inner lining which, in turn, will soil any clothing worn underneath the jacket.

Q. My wax jacket is an absolute rag, it's dropping to bits - but I've had it for years and it has tremendous sentimental value. Can you save it for me?

A. Often these repairs will cost more than a new replacement and therefore we reserve the right to refuse the repair as we deem it to be "beyond cost effective repair" for the customer.

More often than not our qualified inspectors will provide a quotation for essential repairs only and concentrate on areas of the jacket, which will retain the wind and waterproof qualities. For example, replacing a zip or repairing a few holes and tears then finishing off with a reproof.

We will always choose the most cost-effective approach for our customer.

Q. How do I get the best performance from Barbour products?

A. By following the wash/care instructions provided with each product and referring to the advice provided on this site.

If the sleeves of your jacket are too long it is best to have them altered to prevent un-natural creasing and wear.

Check back regularly for new questions but, please feel free to contact us at customer services with any specific requests.

Q. I've shortened the sleeves on my wax jacket but after a few months small holes and wear lines have appeared at the cuffs. What shall I do?

A. Shortening the sleeves will alter the shape of the sleeve at the cuff and unnatural creases and holes may occur.

If the sleeves need altering we can do that for you. Either take your jacket to your local Barbour stockist or return it direct to your local Barbour office. We will add a binding to the cuff in cotton or leatherette.
